New Years Eve : Thousands ring in 2017 at Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto. Thousands of people gathered at Nathan Phillips Square to bid good riddance to 2016 and ring in 2017. YouTube sensations and Burlington natives Walk Off the Earth had the honour of performing the last set of the night before the countdown, playing a mix of both the covers that shot the band into the spotlight — everything from “Closer” by The Chainsmokers to “Hello” by Adele — and original music.
The annual celebration, now in its 32nd year, kicked off at 7 p.m. with a skate party on the rink in front of City Hall featuring several sets by DJ Shub, formally of A Tribe Called Red, as well as singer Nefe, Jamaican-Canadian musician Exco Levi and MC Boogat. Five minutes before midnight, Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong took the stage in front of a packed crowd to assist with the countdown.
This year’s celebration was extra special as 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Confederation. Earlier in the evening, city staff handed out light-up foam batons and mini paper flags emblazed with “CANADA 150” decals that quickly became must-haves amongst attendees.
And at the stroke of midnight, fireworks took off into the air, set to the Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face,” as the crowd exploded with screams and cheers of "Happy New Year!"
Festivities included a skate party, live performances from acts like Walk Off the Earth and, of course, fireworks.
A number of events are scheduled with a skating party beginning at 7 p.m. and musical performances scheduled for 10:55 p.m. that will be headline by Walk Off the Earth. The band from Burlington is coming off a successful year having won Group of the Year at the 2016 Juno Awards.
The countdown to 2017 is scheduled for 11:55 p.m. followed by fireworks at midnight and the annual New Year’s Eve celebration will also officially kick off Canada’s 150th year.
